The Air France 747 from Martinique circled Orly Airport in the early evening haze over Paris; it
was five hours and twenty-two minutes behind schedule because of the severe weather patterns in
the CaribbeanAs the pilot entered his final approach the flight officer acknowledged their
clearance to the tower, then switched to his prescribed sterile frequency and sent a last message in
French to an off limits communications room
“Deuxième, special cargoPlease instruct your interested party to go to his designated holding
    area
“Instructions received and relayed” was the terse reply
The special cargo in question sat in the left rear bulkhead seat in the first-class section of the
aircraft; the seat beside him was unoccupied, on orders of the Deuxième Bureau in cooperation
with WashingtonImpatient, annoyed and unable to sleep because of the constricting bandage
around his neck, Bourne, close to exhaustion, reflected on the events of the past nineteen hoursTo
put it mildly, they had not gone as smoothly as Conklin had anticipatedThe Deuxième had balked
for over six hours as phone calls went back and forth feverishly between Washington, Paris And,
finally, Vienna, VirginiaThe stumbling block, and it was more of a hard rock, was the CIA’s
inability to spell out the covert operation in terms of one Jason Bourne, for only Alexander Conklin
could release the name and he refused to do so, knowing that the Jackal’s penetrations in Paris
extended to just about everywhere but the kitchens of the Tour d’ArgentFinally, in desperation
and realizing it was lunchtime in Paris, Alex placed ordinary, unsafe overseas telephone calls to

Fascinating as this story was, there were two
others that interested me even more, especially
when I thought of how I'd gone rooting through my
    daughter's purse
I found them in an article called "They See with
What's Missing," from The North American Journal
of ParapsychologyIt chronicled the histories of
two psychics, one a woman from Phoenix, the other
a man from Río Gallegos, ArgentinaThe woman was
missing her right hand; the man was missing his
entire right armBoth had had several successes
in helping the police find missing persons
(perhaps failures as well, but these were not set
    out in the piece)
According to the article, both amputee psychics
used the same techniqueThey would be provided
with a piece of the missing person's clothes, or a
sample of his handwritingThey would shut their
eyes and visualize touching the item with the
missing hand (there was a huggermugger footnote
here about something called the Hand of Glory, aka
the Mojo Hand)The Phoenix woman would then "get
an image," which she would relay to her
    interlocutorsThe Argentinian, however, followed
    191
up his communings with brief, furious spates of
automatic writing with his remaining hand, a
process I saw as analogous to my paintings
And, as I say, I might have doubted a few of the
wilder anecdotes I ran across during my Internet
explorations, but I never doubted something was
happening to meEven without the picture of
Carson Jones, I think I would have believed it
Because of the quiet, mostlyExcept when Jack
dropped by, or when Wireman - ever closer - waved

I had no premonition of what was waiting for us
inside the long, overgrown outbuilding, which was

@@@@@To the former she was an interesting object, and
he saw with pleasure the general elegance of her appearance, and
her being in remarkably good looksThe neatness and propriety of
her dress was all that he would allow himself to commend in her
presence, but upon her leaving the room again soon afterwards, he
spoke of her beauty with very decided praise
“Yes,” said Lady Bertram, “she looks very wellI sent Chapman to
    her
“Look well! Oh, yes!” cried MrsNorris, “she has good reason to
look well with all her advantages: brought up in this family as she
has been, with all the benefit of her cousins’ manners before her
Only think, my dear Sir Thomas, what extraordinary advantages
you and I have been the means of giving herThe very gown you
have been taking notice of is your own generous present to her when
dear MrsWhat would she have been if we had
not taken her by the hand?”
Sir Thomas said no more; but when they sat down to table the
eyes of the two young men assured him that the subject might be
gently touched again, when the ladies withdrew, with more success
Fanny saw that she was approved; and the consciousness of looking
well made her look still betterFrom a variety of causes she was
happy, and she was soon made still happier; for in following her
aunts out of the room, Edmund, who was holding open the door,
said, as she passed him, “You must dance with me, Fanny; you must
keep two dances for me; any two that you like, except the first She
had nothing more to wish forShe had hardly ever been in a state so
nearly approaching high spirits in her lifeHer cousins’ former gaiety
on the day of a ball was no longer surprising to her; she felt it to

be indeed very charming, and was actually practising her steps about
the drawing-room as long as she could be safe from the notice of
her aunt Norris, who was entirely taken up at first in fresh arranging
and injuring the noble fire which the butler had prepared
Half an hour followed that would have been at least languid under
any other circumstances, but Fanny’s happiness still prevailed
It was but to think of her conversation with Edmund, and what was
the restlessness of MrsNorris? What were the yawns of Lady
    Bertram?
The gentlemen joined them; and soon after began the sweet expectation
of a carriage, when a general spirit of ease and enjoyment
seemed diffused, and they all stood about and talked and laughed,
and every moment had its pleasure and its hopeFanny felt that
there must be a struggle in Edmund’s cheerfulness, but it was delightful
to see the effort so successfully made
When the carriages were really heard, when the guests began really
to assemble, her own gaiety of heart was much subdued: the
sight of so many strangers threw her back into herself; and besides
the gravity and formality of the first great circle, which the manners
of neither Sir Thomas nor Lady Bertram were of a kind to do away,
she found herself occasionally called on to endure something worse
She was introduced here and there by her uncle, and forced to be
spoken to, and to curtsey, and speak againThis was a hard duty,
and she was never summoned to it without looking at William, as
he walked about at his ease in the background of the scene, and
    longing to be with him
The entrance of the Grants and Crawfords was a favourable epoch
The stiffness of the meeting soon gave way before their popular
manners and more diffused intimacies: little groups were formed,
and everybody grew comfortableFanny felt the advantage; and,
drawing back from the toils of civility, would have been again most
happy, could she have kept her eyes from wandering between
Edmund and Mary CrawfordShe looked all loveliness—and what
might not be the end of it? Her own musings were brought to an

@@@@@The crazed animal leaped, a hurling mass of rage
Jason fired, first one cartridge and then the second, and as the darts were embedded, he whipped his
left arm around the attack dog’s head, yanking the skull counterclockwise, slamming his right knee
up into the animal’s body to ward off the lashing sharp-nailed pawsIt was over in moments—
moments of raging, panicked, finally disintegrating fury—without the howling sounds that might
have carried across the lawn of the general’s estateThe long-haired dog, its narcotized eyes wide,
fell limp in Bourne’s armsHe lowered it to the ground and once again waited, afraid to move until
he knew that no converging inhuman alarms had been sent to the other animals
There were none; there was only the constant murmuring of the forest beyond the prohibiting
fenceJason replaced the CO2 pistol in his holster and crept forward, back to the graveled road,
beads of sweat rolling down his face and into his eyesHe had been away too longYears ago such

unadulterated fearWhere was the man that was? Still, Marie and the children were out there; that
man had to be summonedSummon him!
Bourne stripped out the binoculars and raised them to his eyes againThe moonlight was
sporadic, low-flying clouds intercepting the rays, but the yellow wash was sufficientHe focused
on the shrubbery that fronted the stockade fence that bordered the road outsidePacing back and
forth on a bisecting dirt path like an angry, impatient panther was the black Doberman, stopping
now and then to urinate and poke its long snout into the bushesAs he had been programmed to do,
the animal roamed between the opposing closed iron gates of the enormous circular driveAt each
halting checkpoint it snarled, spinning around several times as if both expecting and loathing the
sharp electrical shock it would receive through its collar if it transgressed without causeAgain, the
method of training went back to Vietnam; soldiers disciplined the attack dogs around ammunition
and matériel depots with such remote-signaling devicesJason focused the binoculars on the far
side of the expansive front lawnHe zeroed in on a third animal, this a huge Weimaraner, gentle in
appearance but lethal in attackThe hyperactive dog raced back and forth, aroused perhaps by
squirrels or rabbits in the brush, but not by human scent; it did not raise a throated growl, the signal
    of assault
Jason tried to analyze what he observed, for that analysis would determine his movesHe had to
assume that there was a fourth or a fifth, or even a sixth animal patrolling the perimeters of
Swayne’s groundsBut why this way? Why not a pack roaming at will and in unison, a far more
